This youth centre in Dalston forms the centerpiece of youth services provision in Hackney. Extensive glazing at ground floor level maintains an open relationship between the street and the common area within. In contrast, the main double height hall sitting over the common area is treated as a strong, sculptural element clad in terracotta tiles. Internally, a sense of openness is achieved with an uncomplicated plan arrangement and generous circulation areas. A simple palette of materials, bold colours, and graphics are used throughout. Exposed galvanized services, concrete soffits and a resin floor give the building a robust, semi-industrial feel. Extensive consultation exercises were held with young people from the existing youth club, local schools, 6th Form College, Hackney Youth Parliament, and local residents; these consultations informed the aesthetic decisions and, crucially, the wide range of activities and special projects the Centre offers.
