Matthew Lloyd Architects won an invited competition to work with St Mary’s Church, Walthamstow to plan for the future of their historic site, in the heart of Walthamstow village. St Mary’s is a growing congregation which is forward looking and with a track record of community engagement. The project will secure the long-term future of the valuable Grade II* historic Church fabric, increase and improve the community space on offer, improve the flexibility of the Church, accommodate a range of arts and performance uses in an accessible setting, increase the presence of the Parish Office and Church in general, and provide new affordable homes for key workers on the site and improve the public realm. The scheme includes a new highly contextual extension to unlock the churches full potential as a community hub, arts and events venue and place of worship; sensitive works to the Grade II* listed Church itself; refurbishment of the historic facade of St Mary’s Welcome Centre and an extension to the building to provide eleven residential units, and construction of a new building providing a Nursery, a community hall and three residential units. The proposed design aims to respect the historic value of the Grade II* church and its setting, in its scale, architectural language and choice of materials.
